00011 Ella Enchanted- Gail Carson Levine

Ella Enchanted- Gail Carson Levine

I was absolutely enchanted by this book (no pun intended). The way it was set, the words, all of it. This was my first time reading this, and I must say it was absolutely SMASHING.

I would like to start off with the clever idea of intertwining Cinderella into the story. I didn’t realize that until about the stepsisters talked about balls and went off for a party, and Lucinda making pumpkin carriages. The plot was quite clever, although in the beginning it gave me the most maddening urge to put the book down, because of the taunts and the UNFAIRNESS she was receiving. There are sometimes when things like that IRK me so much, yet I do not know why.

I quite liked the book bit, where she could read diary entries and letters to people. I got to know Char’s feelings more in depth, and I loved the emotional scene where she had to decline his love letter. (Although it was a tad bit confusing). The emotions and the magic of this story- especially the language was rich and good, and it felt like these beings existed.

One thing though- it was a bit TOO old for me, set back in times where women were treated like this. I wish it could have been a bit more modernized, for I did not enjoy women being treated as pets, not humans.

Also, I felt like this was a book without much of a very deep plot meaning. The introduction was WAY too long and the main thing that was supposed to happen wasn’t all that important sounding. It was confusing when the book nearly got to its end- too abrupt, and too sudden.

Ella Enchanted was an amazing book, and impossible to put down, but I don’t really see the deep meaning, plot twist, exciting part to it. Perhaps it was a bit… TOO predictable. Char was obviously going to marry her, the stepsisters and stepmother got their pay-back. I wish there was… how do I say this, more fling, more drama, and more of a plot twist.

This has become quite a short book review, but I hope you enjoyed it. I would definitely recommend Ella Enchanted for light-reading, but I don’t think there’s any deep meaning in this. It’s very fun, and easy to read, something light-hearted and enjoyable to read during rests to cool your mind.
