The War That Saved My Life- Kimberly Brubaker Bradley
This week I’ve read a lot of books. None of the books gave me the same feeling as this. In the beginning, I wasn’t so sure whether I would like this book. It gave off some vibes (I have this thing called book vibes, which is a lot of the time wrong) that it was going to be dull. But when I started reading, I was immersed.
“The war that saved my life.” Starts with brutal, and horrible moments- where Mam, starts to brutally treat Ada (the main character), while being nicer to Ada’s brother. The scenes are brutal, and my heart wrenches so much for Ava, who has to endure all of that. And I was astonished, that Ava could be that kind to her brother, when he basically almost did nothing for her.
As I continued reading the book, I realized that I was feeling that anger for Ava. Mostly for Ava’s brother, who was so stuck up, when he whined to go back home, where he was the king. I know he loved Ava, but sometimes he was so insensitive I nearly tore my hair out.
The anger disappeared later on, when Jamie (which I forgot to tell you earlier is Ava’s brother) finally is more sensitive and defends her.
My favorite character was actually Fred. Fred, the big, old jolly man who made Ava feel welcome instead of making her incredibly left out and feeling insecure. I think in our world, we need more of those jolly, and sincere people, who have the ability to see the true person inside of every being.
This book was also very much based on real events. Just as in The Lion, The witch, and the wardrobe, talks about real events about the war, and children evacuating, this was also very much true. Children were also dirty, filthy, and often suffered from malnutrition. This was hardly their fault. A lot of them had parents who did not care about them. A lot of them grew up with child abuse, just like Ava did. Perhaps that was why I didn’t expect this story to be a happy one. But it was, and I was pleased.
I think the moral of this story was that love can defeat all. Even through the bombing, Susan, Ava, and Jamie managed to survive. And that was truly a miracle. I think it’s important to keep our love together. Bonded. Strongly. So that when something terrible rains down on us, we can create the umbrella.
Thank you.
