A Tree Grows in Brooklyn- Betty Smith

This took me a while to read. Yes, I saw all the comments on the book, about how amazing it was, and I knew that it was amazing. It was just hard to read at first. Maybe because they were so poor- and the details were so detailed they seemed to break thing up into small pieces and leave me confused. But I knew it was a good book from the start. Also, they were so miserable. They seemed to be only holding it together, and sometimes that was painful to read.

And then this transition happened.

Perhaps that’s what I love most about this book. It starts off with Francie in her teens, then whoosh, she turns back into this little baby- actually, before she was a baby, where Katie, her mother, and her father, Johnny, meeting, and trying to live their life through, and with barely any money.

This book was sad, yet blissful all throughout. All that sadness, all that neglect towards Francie. The way Francie gets lonely after her father dies because of an illness and because of his drunkenness- how Francie’s mother is sometimes way to harsh on Francie. Her heartbreak.

Each one of that made me love Francie for her courage, and her determination.

I have to say my favorite character for once in my life was the main character. I know, I know, I usually don’t do main characters because I’m just- NO, but, this time, Franci was just the perfect protagonist of the story. I admire her for being able to stand through the times and become someone dignified and kind, and also, a much better person that her mother ever was.

I somehow hate her mother. Like, favoritism? Please, no. That’s just unfair. And sometimes, she’s way too mean to her daughter and sometimes makes her feel excluded.

Over all, this story was a real amazing story.  It was sweet, and sad. But it was kind of a more higher level class story- more intricate.

I definitely recommend this to you, because it just shows that sweet, sad, and beautiful narrative of a girl growing up.
