1. Philosophical Nihilism vs. Real Responsibility
If someone believes that the universe is a simulation, they might feel that protecting nature and fighting climate change are meaningless because the world is not fundamentally real. They might think that environmental destruction and human suffering are simply programmed events that do not matter in the long run. However, this belief does not necessarily eliminate our moral responsibilities. Even if the universe were a simulation, our experiences, emotions, and suffering would still feel real to us. For example, marine animals would still suffer from ocean pollution, and people would still experience the consequences of climate change. Therefore, we should protect the environment because our actions have real consequences within the world we experience. The origin of reality does not determine its value; what matters is how our actions affect the lives and ecosystems within it.
2. Technological Escapism in Modern Science
Scientists and thinkers can ensure that futuristic ideas do not distract humanity from immediate environmental and social crises by balancing innovation with practical responsibility. Although exploring artificial intelligence, space colonization, and simulation theory can expand human knowledge, these fields should not replace efforts to address problems such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and poverty. For example, instead of viewing space colonization as an alternative to protecting Earth, scientists should prioritize developing technologies that reduce carbon emissions, restore marine ecosystems, and improve renewable energy. Governments and research institutions can also allocate funding and resources according to the urgency and potential impact of different problems. Scientific progress should not be measured only by how far we can advance technologically, but also by how effectively we use that progress to improve life on Earth. By combining curiosity with practical action, humanity can explore the future without neglecting its present responsibilities.
